Article Writing Tips – Writing Over Your Head

Be honest. When you write something, no matter what it is, you want to impress people…with your knowledge, writing ability or whatever. After all, many people who write have a lot of pride. I have a lot of pride and freely admit it. However, that pride can land you in a lot of trouble when you write over your head. Not sure what I mean by that? This article will explain.

This problem can apply to topics that we either know very well or not at all, but it’s more common to topics that we are not as familiar with. Why is that? Well, when we’re writing about a subject that we have to research because we’re not quite so familiar with it, we’re at an immediate disadvantage. For one thing, we have to do the research, which is time consuming. For another, because we’re not so familiar with the topic, we don’t quite have the confidence that we have with other topics.

As a result, whether we know it or not, whether consciously or subconsciously, we try to impress people with our writing in an attempt to cover up the fact that we aren’t as comfortable with the topic as we’d like to be. The problem with doing this is that most people can see right through this. The reason is simple. When you’re writing about a topic that you’re not as familiar with your writing is going to be a little more wooden than with topics that we know like the back of our hands. It’s almost unavoidable. So when we try to impress, we actually draw more attention to the fact that we aren’t comfortable with the topic.

So what’s the answer? The answer is simple. When writing about a topic that you’re not as familiar with, write simply. There is no need to impress people. Just give them the facts. Don’t try to feed them a lot of fancy words that you wouldn’t see used in a Shakespeare play. You’re only going to look silly. If you speak plainly and simply, not only will people have more respect for your writing but you’ll actually get through to them better.

I guess what I am saying, in a round about way, is be yourself.

It works really well.

To YOUR Success,

Steven Wagenheim
